Draft Day: Do the Chiefs Trade Up?

Updated: Jun 30, 2022

As draft day draws ever closer it seems as if the Chiefs are not letting anybody see their cards. The team has obvious needs, however when and where certain positions will be taken and what players the Chiefs want to fill those needs lay in shadow. One possible outcome that will be focused on in this article is the prospect of the Chiefs trading up to take a player. The possibility is actually quite strong, especially with the wide receiver and edge class this year, but let's hash out potential scenarios. Before you ask, no this is not a mock draft, I covered that in a previous article (and depending on what comes I may do another) so let's get started.

There's a lot of picks (and even players) that could be traded to get a higher spot in the draft, what I would look out for are 1 of those 2 first round picks to be traded along with one of the later rounds to either get a player such as Josh Allen from Jacksonville or into the top 15. Those 3rd round picks also have potential to trade for higher positioning, however I think the idea of trading one of the firsts as well as one of the 4th-7th round picks seems more plausible. Whatever happens, if the Chiefs choose to stand with their current 1st round picks, I can see them picking up George Pickens or Skyy Moore, along with EDGE help in either George Karlaftis or David Ojabo. You have to keep in mind that other teams' strategies come into play come draft day, so really anything can happen.

The prize player though, in terms of who to trade up for it seems, falls to three candidates: Jameson Williams, Travon Walker, or Chris Olave. Jameson Williams visited KC today, and would fit in greatly with our offense as a Tyreek Hill replacement and deep threat. Travon Walker is one of the best EDGE/DT prospects in the draft and would be a huge get. As for Chris Olave, I think he's more of a wait and see what happens with Jameson Williams first. If I'm the Chiefs, I am trading up for those two, and if I'm sticking to my guns in terms of trading up for a pick and both Williams and Walker are off the board then Olave will be a good alternate. In the end, Brett Veach will need to have a great draft in order to justify the offseason moves the Chiefs have made so far. A lot of positions are very weak right now for the Chiefs, but in the end I believe in the long game and think if Veach can score at LEAST three to four solid players (preferably more) then we can call this draft a success. I believe in #VeachBlackMagic, do you?
