I have been asked many times on if I will be doing fantasy this year and if I will be writing about it. You asked, I deliver (I was going to write about fantasy football even if you didn't ask but you asked so...)
In the first installment of the OFFICIAL Burn KC Fantasy Football Guide, I wanted to name my preseason Top 3 at every fantasy football position, along with a sleeper pick to watch for. With other volumes and depending on how the season goes I will be writing about assorted topics regarding that week in Fantasy Football. Who to start, who to sit, who's trending up, who's trending down, that kind of thing. Let's jump into it though, as there will be a surprise announcement at the end of this article...
TOP 3 QUARTERBACKS
PATRICK MAHOMES
JOSH ALLEN
LAMAR JACKSON
SLEEPER: DEREK CARR
Picking quarterbacks this year, the top 3 are easy, it's just WHERE in the top 3 these players land that is subject to controversy. I think Mahomes and Allen are 1 and 2 respectively, and no I'm not saying that just because I'm a Chiefs fan, but I believe Mahomes to be the best QB in the NFL right now in terms of abilities. He's got a healthy balance of excellent power, underrated and underappreciated accuracy, and scrambling abilities that hang in the range of Top 6 or 7 scramblers in the NFL. Not to mention he has a more balanced wide receiving corps this year, and I think that will open up all sorts of weapons for him. He may not have Tyreek anymore, but he still has plenty of options. I think Allen is relatively on the same level, however he just doesn't have the options Mahomes does. As for Lamar it's the same way, just less throwing ability. He makes up for it though in scrambling. Derek Carr being my sleeper pick is because if, and this is a decent sized IF he can utilize his weapons in Davante Adams, Darren Waller, Josh Jacobs, and Hunter Renfrow (Only one of those guys I believe is Top 3 at their position, something to note) then he could have a career year and earn a lot of points through the air.
TOP 3 RUNNING BACKS
JONATHAN TAYLOR
DERRICK HENRY
NICK CHUBB
SLEEPER: NAJEE HARRIS
Yes, I put Jonathan Taylor ahead of Derrick Henry, and I'll tell you why. Look at the weapons Matt Ryan has and tell me that Indy will have a pass heavy offense this year...yeah no. They won't and they wasted all that money on a guy that is past his prime and has basically no receivers to throw to except Michael Pittman and Jonathan Taylor. Derrick Henry is a lock in the top 3 because ability wise he is best out of the group, however injury concerns and the fact that he's the oldest of the top 3 backs in the league (which matters quite a bit with running backs) makes me take him as a close second. Nick Chubb, barring the Browns for some reason wanting to pass a bunch with (hopefully) no quarterback for an extended period of time, will get good numbers as well. Let's talk about Najee Harris though. The guy was a STUD last year and the only reason he didn't get recognized the way he should've is because everyone was focused on Big Ben's last hurrah. The dude put up fantastic numbers and we can expect him to put up more of the same because, you know, the Pittsburgh QB situation...Though I'm not counting out Mitch Trubisky having a career reboot!
TOP 3 WIDE RECEIVERS
COOPER KUPP
JUSTIN JEFFERSON
DEEBO SAMUEL
SLEEPER: MECOLE HARDMAN/JUJU SMITH-SHUSTER
Once again, we have pretty solid locks at 1 and 2, though I have some concerns with Kirk Cousins which tempts me to put Jefferson at 3. Samuel was a Swiss Army Knife for the 49ers last year, and will likely be that again which means a LOT of fantasy points for those that can nab him. Obviously, Kupp is the best wide receiver in the game, but doesn't necessarily have reverses in his arsenal or any type of Deebo-type plays. There's a reason people are comparing wide receivers and play styles to the guy. Shoot, I may have just talked myself into putting Deebo at one, but Kupp will still put up massive numbers because of his deep threat ability and route running to create YAC. I put TWO Chiefs wide receivers as sleepers because honestly? Either one looks like they're playing with a chip on their shoulder this year, and with Patrick Mahomes as their quarterback we could very well see some fireworks.
TOP 3 TIGHT ENDS
TRAVIS KELCE
MARC ANDREWS
GEORGE KITTLE
SLEEPER: PAT FRIERMUTH
Ah yes, the "GOAT" tight end debate. Let's be honest here, if Kelce continues to put up massive numbers for like 2-3 more years people will put him ahead of Gronk and Gonzalez finally. I think he deserves it now given how he completely changed the tight end landscape but who am I to say? I am but a humble Chiefs fan. This is a pretty easy top 3, all three a incredibly talented at their position and put up great receiving numbers. Pretty simple to judge in terms of talking tight end fantasy stats. Can they score touchdowns and can they put up big yards? Boom, you have your answer. Talking about Pat Friermuth though, the guy very subtly became one of Big Ben's favorite targets, especially in the redzone. I expect more targets and more production, and we could very well see his name climb the ladder.
TOP 3 DEFENSES
BILLS
BUCS
RAMS
SLEEPER: CHIEFS/CHARGERS
The Bills were already solid on defense, but with the addition of Von Miller and a few other veteran pieces they've become a force on defense. The Bucs defense has not gotten any worse from last year, so they're up here too. As for the Rams, I just have to mention two names: Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey. Top 5 at WORST defense due to that. As for the sleeper pick, I picked who I believe to be the fastest defense that may very well be a force and the defense with the biggest threat to opposing quarterbacks that, if they could get better in pass coverage, would be a BRICK WALL. The Chiefs had a pretty bad defense last year, but Veach decided to work his black magic and change that. A couple key signings, a couple guys playing with a chip on their shoulder, and rookies that look primed for action may result in a very dangerous defense. The Chargers have Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack bookending their defensive line, I.E. they're going to be bothersome for a stacked AFC West in terms of QBs. Expect them to be a foil to that.
I won't list kickers or flex options (for the time being) in this article. It's getting to be pretty girthy and I'd rather just save good 2 and 3 options for a later article. Above is the list for who I believe should be on your list for team builders. Guys that I give my guarantee will give you points a plenty. Tune in next week and see what other advice you can get from your favorite fantasy sage. Speaking of fantasy though however, I have come to the conclusion that the best way to launch and promote my Patreon is through fantasy football! I will be holding a poll to gauge pricing interest, and will be starting a league that is either Patreon gated, or if the community votes, free but no prize involved. Let me know your thoughts in the comments down below or through social media, and happy drafting!
Burn Notice: 10/10 Fantasy definitely lights my fire, if you can't tell.
