By now hopefully you've heard of the Kansas City Current, the women's soccer team that represents well, Kansas City. They're owned by Brittany Mahomes, KCTV5 sports anchor Dani Welniak has just joined on as Executive Director of Communications (Congrats to her by the way she will kill it and I think that is a perfect hire), and they've very quickly became one of the most revolutionary teams in KC pro sports and really US pro sports this past year. Yes, that doesn't just mean women's pro sports either, it means PRO SPORTS.
The team has unveiled the first EVER women's professional soccer facility in the US, officially opened this week after a fairly quick building process off of 635 and 45 Highway in North Kansas City. Just seeing it from the highway is pretty incredible, but getting our first glimpses inside the building have been spectacular. The building has been designed by women owned construction firm Monarch Build, and includes weights areas, cardio, recovery and physical therapy, and nutrition all inside, along with film theaters, locker rooms, and two training fields. The whole project cost $18 million, and has been called by ESPN as one of the crown jewels of US Women's Soccer. This facility could very well show the direction the NWSL is headed, a bright future where women's soccer gains an even larger following, especially with the World Cup coming up here in the States and in KC. This continues to show not only the US, but the world that Kansas City is one of the capitals of soccer growth and development, and truly deserved that World Cup Host City title. Well done to everyone involved in the effort, it's groundbreaking, it's beautiful, and it has the ability to shape women's sports in the US into something like we've never seen it before. All here in our little "flyover town" of KC. Psssh, gimme a break. Any time you all wanna retire that mark please do so.
Burn Notice: 10/10 Like a volcano, this is truly groundbreaking (or burning? IDK)
